Division Two – July 25, 2017

Tuesday night marked the final league matches of the Division Two regular season before the start of the Sportstown Challenge Cup Tournament.  In our match of the week, United Nations took on Vancouver Strikers with UN needing all 3 points to guarantee top spot in the league. The game was close with chances coming from both sides but there was no scoring in the first half. It was a back and forth event in the second half, but shots hit posts and crossbars, or streaked in front of goal with neither side able to find the net. With only 5 minutes to go United Nations got a free kick outside the Strikers penalty area. Vancouver Strikers’ goalkeeper went to punch the ball clear but failed to meet the ball cleanly.  There were shouts for pushing, but no call from the referee was forthcoming. That saw the ball bounce straight to UN’s Fraser Kirkland who easily headed into the net. The Strikers tried to even the score but the game ended with a 1-0 win for United Nations which gave them their first Championship victory since joining the League.

Division One – July 27, 2017

On Thursday night Delta Blaze extended their impressive winning streak to 10 games when they beat Binger’s Army 5-1. Lance Grisdale opened the scoring for Bingers Army after only 5 minutes of play but 10 minutes later Marcus Brougham had Blaze even on a header from a corner kick. Before the end of the half Blaze were awarded a penalty and Geoff Salt blasted home the eventual winner. The second half was all Delta Blaze as goals from Matteo Serka, Emile Saimovici and Brad Caldwell rounded out the scoring. Delta Blaze have 2 games remaining in the regular season and hope to complete a clean sweep of Division One. If they are successful, they will be the first team in the league’s 40 year history to achieve that goal.
