KAMLOOPS, BC –– The Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) today announced the recipients of nine Scholarship Awards it has to present this year.
Each recipient receives a $500 contribution toward the cost of their post-secondary education.
The nine 2015 Scholarship Award donors and winners are:
1. McDonald’s Restaurants of Kamloops – Kaitlyn Guise (North Kamloops Secondary)
2. Bank of Montreal – Brennan Atamanchuk (North Kamloops Secondary)
3. Wendy’s Restaurants of Kamloops – Rya Jaswal (Sa-Hali Secondary)
4. Hansport (Male) – Kyle Hutton (St. Ann’s Academy)
5. Hansport (Female) – Sierra Despot (Westsyde Secondary)
6. Errol Wild Family Memorial Scholarship – Joshua Coelho (South Kamloops Secondary)
7. Forward Law LLP – Jasmin Jahj (Sa-Hali Secondary)
8. Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (Male) – Brysen Watson (Valleyview Secondary)
9. Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (Female) – Jenna Hardy (Sa-Hali Secondary)
The nine recipients were selected from a record 37 applications.
KYSA Scholarships are presented to selected students proceeding from Grade 12 to a university or other accredited post-secondary institution approved by the KYSA Scholarship Awards Committee and/or students already attending a post-secondary institute, but were under the age of 18 as of January 1 of the current year.
To qualify, an applicant for a KYSA Scholarship must have been registered in the association for three or more seasons (not necessarily consecutive).
The KYSA Scholarship Awards Committee chose the nine recipients based on a variety of criteria, such as an applicant’s scholastic achievements, participation in school activities, leadership qualities, sportsmanship and time spent volunteering in church or community organizations. Soccer talent is just one of the yardsticks the selectors use to determine the award winners. A candidate’s contributions as a referee, coach or manager in the KYSA is also taken into consideration.
“We feel we have acknowledged some truly outstanding student-athletes again this year,” says KYSA President Graham Cope, who also chairs the Scholarship Awards Committee. “As usual, we received more applications than the number of awards we have to present and some difficult decisions had to be made. The quality of the candidates just gets better and better year-after-year. We just wish we had more money to distribute so that we could recognize and assist more excellent student-athletes!”
Award recipients must provide proof of registration in an approved post-secondary institute to receive payment of their award.
