CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee Fines Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, Levies Provisional Stadium Ban – CONCACAF

CONCACAF Media Release:

Miami (Tuesday, April 28, 2015) – The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today that its Disciplinary Committee has levied fines and issued a provisional stadium ban on Costa Rican club Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, for incidents of discrimination and breaches of safety protocol which occurred during the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League semifinal stage match played on April 7, 2015 at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.

The club was fined an undisclosed amount for discrimination by Alajuelense supporters attending the match perpetuated against Impact de Montreal players, in accordance with article 58 part. 2 a). of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and the CONCACAF Protocol for Racist Incidents during Matches.

LD Alajuelense was also fined a separate undisclosed amount for failing to secure the field from projectiles thrown from the crowd. The club was reprimanded for repeated infringements with regards to the lack of security at its home stadium, in accordance with Art. 14 (reprimand), and Art. 67 par. 1 and 3 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Regulations.

In addition to the fines, the Disciplinary Committee has issued a provisional ban on the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto.  Should LD Alajuelense qualify for any future edition of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, the club will not be allowed to play its next home game at the stadium.

This is the first time the CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee has levied an economic sanction for a discrimination incident during the Champions League, re-enforcing the Confederation’s zero tolerance policy concerning such incidents. CONCACAF embraces and promotes diversity as a key value of football by fostering a culture of respect and inclusiveness.

The final match of the 2014/15 Scotiabank Champions League will be played on Wednesday, April 29, at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada. Impact de Montreal and Club America are tied 1-1 on aggregate in the home-and-away final, heading into the tournament’s decisive match day.
