VISL teams in BC Soccer Provincial Cup

-submitted by Vince Greco

¼ Finals took place over the weekend for 5 different VISL teams,

Overall, 2 of our 5 remaining teams made it to the semifinals scheduled for next weekend.

In the A Cup, a tough weekend as both teams were eliminated.

Nanaimo went to the Mainland to face a strong VMSL (Vancouver Metro Soccer League) team – and they did it shorthanded as a couple key players were unable to make the trip.

After only being down 1-0 at halftime, things were looking better than anticipated.  However, a red card to a Nanaimo player changed things in a hurry and Pegasus took full advantage to defeat Nanaimo United 5-0.

Cowichan (our top seed ) hosted Croatia from the VMSL.  Sadly, missed opportunities in the first half came back to haunt Cowichan as they were defeated in 120 minutes. (2 x 15 minute extra time halves) Cowichan had 3 or 4 chances to score in the first half, but were not able to capitalize and get the early first goal. Going into halftime, it was 0-0.

Cowichan went up 1-0 at the 79’ mark on a goal from Keevan Webb. After a couple more chances to put the game away, Croatia did tie the game up at 85’  Croatia looked to score again, but it was called back because of an offside.

Croatia seemed to have the better chances in the extra halves, and were rewarded with a goal at 102’.

Cowichan attempted to equalize, but no such luck.

This one slipped away, unfortunate as the team was hoping to go deep into the tournament with a sweet home draw throughout.

In the U21 Cup, our last team standing was the Mid Isle Mariners.

They also needed 120’ to decide a winner.  Billy Bagiopoulos scored for Mid Isle and they were able to defeat North Delta of the VMSL 1-0 . Alex Jones recorded the shutout for the Mid Isle Mariners.  Mid Isle now travels to the Mainland to face a very strong side in the semi final – EDC of the VMSL.

In the Masters Cup, 1 of 2 teams were able to make it to the semifinal.

UVic Alumni defeated West Van of the VMSL 4-2 here on Saturday.

This game had UVic up 4-0 and in total control during most of the match. WestVan did score one at the 65’ mark as well as on the final play of the game.

UVic goals – 2 by Toby Vallance, and 1 each by Dean Anderson & Jason Owen.

UVic will host Metro Ford of VMSL this weekend upcoming – and we will not have the all VISL semifinal that we were hoping for.

The other ¼ Final had Saanich Fusion Old School travel to the Mainland where they were defeated by above mentioned Metro Ford by score of 3-0.
