VISL Mixed Emotions in Provincial Cup Semis

– By Vince Greco, VISL President

A weekend of mixed emotion as we are happy to have 1 team into the BC Cup Finals next week, but are left wondering what may have been on 2 of the other 3 games where we did not get a favorable result.

In the A Cup game, Cowichan lost to EDC of Burnaby by a score of 2-3 and it was in sudden death penalty kicks – 7 shooters to be exact.

Cowichan was up 2-1 in the 2nd half of the game and while the game was in injury time, EDC scored the tying goal……with only 2 minutes of added time left. EDC almost scored the winner with 10 seconds left too.

Overtime solved nothing, then penalty shots and the result.

Cowichan had a very good chance of being in the Final next week, and were ever so close to getting the job done.

This will be a motivator for next year to say the least. It was almost a perfect season, a great year none the less.

In the Masters Cup, Saanich Fusion Old School had their hands full with the Croatia team from the Mainland. They were at par ( 1-1 ) till halftime, but the experience and depth of the Vancouver Croatia side proved to be too much and Saanich Fusion lost 1-5.

A great learning experience for the team as they start to show better results in the Masters category.

In the U-21 game, Victoria Highlanders lost 0-1 to Surrey United.

This was a heartbreaker of a game as well as the Highlander squad had plenty of chances to score, were just unable to find the back of the net.

The Surrey keeper played well,  but the man of the match for them was their center back who was very strong all game.

There was late flurries in an attempt to score and several chances were squandered.  A good year for the group, but they could have been in the Final next week with any sort of luck.

The Cinderella story for our League was where we ended up getting a finalist for next week’s Finals on the Mainland.

Port Alberni was able to beat Langley of the FVSL 3-2 in penalty shots.

The game started out horribly as Alberni gave up a goal in the first 15 seconds of the game, they battled back and the game eventually went to OT and then penalty shots.

The Port Alberni keeper stole the show as he saved 3 penalties to allow Alberni to be victorious and move on to next week’s Final for the B Provincial Cup.

Extremely proud of the VISL teams – and nice to see that they understand that we are not that far off from what it takes to get into a Final for BC Provincial Cup. We could have had 3 teams in the Finals realistically – just fell short !
