Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Victoria Highlanders travelled to Vancouver today with intentions on building upon their undefeated record. In a competitive battle, the home side, Vancouver United scored an eighty-sixth minute goal to take a 1-0 lead and netted an added-time insurance marker with Highlanders pressing forward to secure a 2-0 victory, their first on the season.

Vancouver United, competing in their inaugural home game applied pressure early. Highlanders FC maintained defensive composure and began to counter, though both sides could not find an accurate shot on goal by 30 minutes.

Striker, Craig Gorman was set free on a golden opportunity in minute 38’, only to be denied by the United keeper. The half ended scoreless.

Competitive will carried through for both teams in the second half; familiarity breeding contempt as these teams battled to a 1-1 draw the previous Sunday in Victoria. Highlander keeper, Noah Pawlawski parried an 18 yard strike in the 77th minute.Vancouver United found the back of the goal in the 86th minute as Alex Olesa finished a cross at the edge of the goal area. Highlanders pushed forward looking for the equalizer, but were countered in the third minute of added time with Vancouver United securing their first ever Pacific Coast Soccer League victory 2-0 off the foot of Marco Visintin.

Highlanders FC undefeated streak ended after securing two wins and three draws in the first five matches of the season.

“It was a very competitive game with them scoring late. When we tried to go forward with more numbers, we were caught short for their second goal”, reflected head coach, David Dew. “I’m pleased with our willingness to battle and the spirit to chase the game after giving up the late goal. We’ll regroup for tomorrow and look to convert on our chances, especially on set pieces”.

Highlanders FC are back in action Sunday, May 24th with a 2pm kick-off versus Vancouver Thunderbirds at the Wolfson West Field on the campus of the University of British Columbia.

Highlanders next home match is Saturday, June 13th vs. Khalsa Sporting Club, a 4pm kick-off at Royal Athletic Park.
