RASA Summer League Division Champions Crowned

-submitted by RASA

Both divisions of this year’s RASA Summer League came down to the wire with a final match between two top teams determining the 2018 League Champions.

In Division One, Rino’s Tigers faced Delta Blaze in a postponed fixture with both teams tied on 14 points and needing to win to claim the championship. Westside FC had amassed 16 points with their schedule complete as they sat idle, waiting and hoping for a draw that would allow them to claim the title. The young Tigers appeared to be the stronger side on the day and were leading 2-0 at half time. They continued to show their dominance by doubling their lead with two second half goals and looked to be coasting to the league title. However, the Blaze fought back and scored twice to narrow the gap, but it was a case of too little, too late as the Tigers held on to win the game by a 4-2 margin and take the title of Division One League Champions.

The race for the title in Division Two was even tighter as Metropolitan FC and Bombastic FC finished the season tied for first place on 31 points, forcing a single game playoff to determine the league champion. The deciding match proved once again how equal these two squads are this summer, as Bombastic dominated the opening half and took a 2-0 lead, but Metropolitan stormed back in the second half to knot the score at 2 apiece. Metropolitan kept their momentum into extra time and were quick off the mark, scoring early in the first extra period. However, Bombastic managed to fight back in the final stanza and made it 3-3 before the whistle blew to send the game to a penalty shootout. The see-saw battle continued from the penalty spot, as Bombastic nailed their first two shots while Metropolitan came up empty. Incredibly after that Bombastic proceeded to miss three consecutive shots, while Metropolitan shooters successfully converted their three remaining shots to win the Division Two League Championship for their first time since joining the league.
