Gol TV Canada Leaves the Airwaves

Gol TV Canada, a specialty cable channel owned by Toronto FC parent Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, signed off for the final time Monday evening. The channel was primarily a home for Toronto FC replays & shows, along with live Brazillian, Uruguayan, & Mexican league matches.

The channel was launched in 2005, and was originally owned by Insight Sports. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment purchased the channel in 2009, with the intent of making it the central TV hub for Toronto FC & Major League Soccer. For many years Gol TV Canada hosted Bundesliga broadcasts, but those rights were purchased earlier this year by Rogers Sportsnet.

Gol TV Canada is the second soccer specialty service to fold in Canada. Fox Sportsworld Canada, which had an impressive array of live soccer at its peak, went off the air in 2012 when its parent company, Shaw Media, pulled the plug. BeIn Sport and Sportsnet World remain as Canada’s soccer specialty services, while Sportsnet and TSN have broadened the number of leagues and matches they show.
