The John F. Kennedy Cup has a unique history amongst North America’s trophies for soccer. Founded in 1960, the Kennedy Cup was the first (and only) sporting trophy to be sanctioned by the late President of the United States. It also was the base for some of the first meaningful matches between clubs from British Columbia’s PCSL, California, Oregon, Washington and Mexico. When President Kennedy was assassinated in November, 1963, it was one of the few sporting events in the United States to take place that month with the family’s blessing.

This past week, Scotland, followed by England and Ireland, banned heading the ball in under 12s. Heading the ball is the act of bouncing a flying soccer ball off of (ideally) the top of one’s forehead to direct the ball. It’s a practice that scientists have recently flagged as dangerous, linking it to neurological damage and 3.5 times the risk of dementia in later life. Canada, it turns out, has a similar ban in place.

Known for his creativity and energy on the field, he entered Major League Soccer out of Spartanburg Methodist College as a first-round draft pick. His career was on the rise with Real Salt Lake and he played in the 2013 MLS Cup. But then personal problems got in the way. Velasquez was an alcoholic, admittedly made poor decisions, was arrested for DUI, and in 2015 decided to turn his life around.
