Former New Westminster Royal & Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer Errol Crossan passes away at 85 – CSA
Crossan, a two-time national Challenge Trophy winner in Canada, will best be remembered as a “59er” from Norwich City’s magical FA Cup run in 1958-59. The so-called “Giant Killers” reached the semi-final round, a run that included victories over first division teams Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur before “we got put out by Luton in the replay.”

League One Ontario kicks off for 2016 – Red Nation Online
The last week of April and first weekend of May sees the start of League One Ontario’s (L1O) third season – the highest domestic level of soccer in Ontario. Like elsewhere in Canada and United States, L1O continues to grow with the expansion of five new men’s clubs this year, bringing the total to 16 clubs, while the league also has nine women’s teams with Darby FC the only club not also playing a men’s team.

Memorial soccer tournament for slain Spruce Grove women now in its 5th year – CBC
Twelve teams got together in Spruce Grove to raise awareness about their friend’s cold case through the game they love. Jolene Cote was found dead in 2011. Police ruled the 36-year-old’s death a homicide, but her case remains unsolved and no charges have been laid.

Ottawa Fury FC Notches Win In Home Opener, First Victory of NASL Spring Season – NASL
After four games on the road, which yielded one goal, one draw, and one point, Ottawa Fury FC returned to the friendly confines, before 7,023 at TD Place, and defeated Miami FC, 2-0, in its home opener on Saturday afternoon. It was Fury FC’s first home game since last year’s semifinal win over Minnesota United in The Championship. Expansion Miami FC is still seeking its first victory in the NASL.

Kim Little’s goal early in the second half gave Seattle Reign FC a 1-0 victory over FC Kansas City in a rematch of the last two NWSL Championships, both of which went to the Blues. Two weeks after the shocking end of the Reign’s Memorial Stadium unbeaten streak to Sky Blue, the two-time Shield winners embarked on a new streak while winning their second straight overall. FC Kansas City have taken just a single point from three matches on the season.

A dark cloud hangs over the eight-team Women’s National League. In theory, the league has been going from strength-to-strength since Peamount United became inaugural champions in the 2011/12 season. Raheny United (now Shelbourne) made the Champions League knock-out stage last season and Wexford were unlucky to not emulate that feat this year. Public interest is minimal and with incidents like the infamous penalty shootout, national media don’t exactly flock to games every week.
