I have to sound off to somebody
April 4, 2008 - Steve Payne
I have to sound off to somebody. I watched some of the game between Canada's womens team and Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday - about 15 minutes was all I could bear - and Canada, despite winning, were absolute crap. I never saw one moment in that 15 minutes in which Canada put more than two or three passes together. I cannot help but think that the influence of the womens team on Canada's soccer is partly to blame for the demise of the program in general. The quality of Canada's play was so abysmal that I have seen better on a Sunday morning league in the smallest villages of England. It is criminal that it is allowed to continue.
Even a member of the commentary team remarked that we are used to seeing this style from Canada.
I feel sorry for the players. I am positive they would jump for joy if someone said; "Ladies, forget all this past rubbish, we are going to play a passing game instead of biff, bang, wallop." It is time we showed the world that Canada's women can play this game the way it should be. We have the players, how about we give them the licence to pass the ball to each other instead of asking them to see how far they can kick it.
